COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 32nd Kentlands/Lakelands 5K Run, Walk, and Kid’s Fun Runs will start on Saturday, August 30th at 8 a.m. in the Kentlands and Lakelands neighborhoods and is expected to draw over 1,300 runners and 4,000 spectators. Participants will enjoy a community festival with live bands, a merchant expo, a kids’ fun run, and an awards ceremony — while the Gaithersburg Police Department will release road closure details later this week.  The MoCo Show

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Maman Joon, a Persian restaurant known for its family flavors, will expand to Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda by taking over the former Brio’s Chicken and Tara Thai space and will also open at the 270 Center in Gaithersburg (in the former Pieology Pizzeria space) with a menu featuring kabobs, sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts, and other specialties (built on recipes and spices from Iran).  The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS

  • A Montgomery County judge sentenced driver Raphael Mayorga to 22 years and 60 days for hitting Sgt. Pat Kepp—who lost both legs—in a 2023 crash on I-270 in Gaithersburg.  FOX 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Potomac Community Foundation launched as a nonprofit to boost education, job opportunities, and historic legacy preservation in Montgomery County, including Scotland, and will support programs like the Scotland STORM academic enrichment led by Gaithersburg native Krystal Holland Davis — a leader with over 30 years of community service.  The MoCo Show

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County’s DEP and Chesapeake Bay Trust announced $900,000 in funding to help local groups improve water quality—grants range from $40,000 to $100,000 and must be applied for by 4 p.m. on November 13.  Montgomery Community Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Government has announced a holiday schedule for Labor Day, Sept. 1, that will close county offices, MC 311, state offices, courts, libraries, and several transit services while some services like alcohol beverage stores, Ride On bus service, and outdoor pools will operate on limited schedules—trash and recycling collections will be delayed by one day.  The MoCo Show

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Demolition of the long-vacant Rockshire Village Center is nearly complete to clear the way for a new mixed-use neighborhood featuring 60 homes, 5,200 square feet of retail space including Dunkin’—and plans include parks, playgrounds, and pedestrian pathways. Developer EYA— a Bethesda-based firm— worked with the city and local community to schedule construction that will begin after demolition and is set to finish in 2027.  The MoCo Show

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Washington Spirit traded forward Makenna Morris—born and raised in Germantown—to Racing Louisville FC for $115k in allocation funds on August 27; she played a key role in helping her team reach the NWSL Championship and win the Challenge Cup last season.  The MoCo Show
