COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Walnut Hill Barber Shop (16527 S Frederick Ave.) will close its doors tomorrow after serving Gaithersburg for 58 years. A farewell gathering will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and two barbers will move to Ann’s Barber at Potomac Village.  The MoCo Show
  • Supporters who restored Scotland AME Zion Church in Potomac have formed a foundation to improve education and job opportunities for underserved communities and to preserve Black history along Seven Locks Road—its programs include launching Scotland Storm for local children.  Montgomery Community Media

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Taiwanese restaurant Bao Bei is now open at 12055 Rockville Pike in Montrose Crossing shopping center. Owner Kevin Hsieh—who grew up in Montgomery County and started his business as a ghost kitchen—serves a menu of signature gua bao and other Taiwanese street dishes.  The MoCo Show
  • Claire’s announced it will close over 200 stores nationwide including Gaithersburg Square — other Maryland sites like Wheaton Mall, Harford Mall, and Country Club Mall will also shut down while the Bethesda store remains open. The company paused liquidation at some locations as Ames Watson will acquire its North American operations for about $140 million — advancing its restructuring plan.  The MoCo Show

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Gaithersburg player won a $50,000 prize in the Powerball drawing on August 27 after buying the ticket at Safeway on Goshen Road—while the jackpot rose to an estimated $950 million for the drawing on Saturday, August 30.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Gaithersburg Board of Supervisors of Elections certified candidates for the November 4 election—Mayor Jud Ashman and councilmembers Lisa Henderson and Jim McNulty are seeking re-election—while other candidates including Tiffany Kelly, Chris Thoms and Omodamola Williams join the ballot with mail-in voting available to residents within city limits.  Montgomery Community Media
  • The Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade will cause a detour on Montgomery County’s Ride On Bus Route 57 from Lakeforest to Shady Grove on Monday, September 1, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.—all Ride On bus routes will operate on a Sunday schedule for the holiday.  The MoCo Show
  • More than 20,000 Metro riders cast their vote for the new 8000-series rail cars and option three was the clear winner. Metro said the new cars—featuring wider aisles and increased digital signage—will debut in late 2027 to improve customer service.  Montgomery Community Media
