Gina’s Cucina Siciliana is moving closer to opening at 640 Center Point Way in Kentlands with a liquor license hearing scheduled for Oct.
1 (with Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services) as the restaurant fills the space left by Cinco de Mayo and will serve Sicilian recipes inspired by family traditions.
🎭 Culture
Clyde’s, a long-standing restaurant group with roots since 1963 and locations including Chevy Chase & Rockville, was named Best Crabcake in Washington City Paper’s Best of D.C. awards on Friday, Aug.
28. Its jumbo lump crab cakes are served in classic and summer styles.
🎓 Education
Maryland Superintendent Dr. Carey M.
Wright and MCPS Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor visited Argyle and Odessa Shannon middle schools on Friday to start the new academic year. They praised recently renovated facilities, dedicated educators, and strong student performance (emphasizing continued state support for safe, engaging learning environments).
MCPS is preparing for potential HVAC issues since forecasts show temperatures in the 90s next week.
District building teams will respond to heat strain on older systems and advise students, staff and families to drink water and wear light clothing during outdoor activities.
🏛️ Government
Most City of Gaithersburg offices will be closed Monday, Sept.
7 for Labor Day — selected facilities including the Police Department and Community Museum will operate with modified hours. Recycling will be collected on Sept. 5, and the Labor Day parade begins at 10am.
🏥 Health
More than 890,000 children are returning to classrooms across Maryland this week, and Gov. Wes Moore highlights the state's Vax Act — which keeps current immunization requirements for K-12 and preschool programs intact.
The Maryland Department of Health will soon release its first vaccine schedules for children and adults.
📰 Real Estate
Montgomery County authorized up to $420 million in bonds to support VIVA White Oak's first phase, which includes a Costco + 1,000 apartments, townhomes and a town center near the FDA headquarters and Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center.
Phase One will be finished by 2033.
