CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery County Police asked for help identifying two Hispanic males wanted for burglaries on July 13, July 26 and August 4 at the 7100 Westlake Dr. location in Bethesda & the suspects, described as being in their late 30s and wearing black with notable tattoos, may earn a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to their arrest. - ➤ On Sunday, August 31 at 2:42 a.m., Montgomery County police responded to a 911 call near 9000 Centerway Road in Gaithersburg when Luis Antonio Quintanilla (39) fatally shot his partner, Maritza Ferman Sorto (35) and he was arrested in Irving, Texas on Monday for first-degree murder. - ➤ Montgomery County will host its 17th annual African Heritage Month Proclamation Celebration on Tuesday, September 9 at 6:00 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Center—organized by the African Affairs Advisory Group, the free event will feature cultural performances and remarks from County officials. - ➤ Deep End, an award-winning indie series by playwright John Becker, is now streaming on Fawesome TV and received a $5,000 grant from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. Set in a Maryland campground, the show stars DMV actors and works with local businesses (DC Pretzels, Rocklands Farm Winery, and Honey Acres Farm) while giving fair chances to its crew. The MoCo Show
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ MCPS answered FAQs after the Aug. 21 board meeting about proposed changes to secondary programs that aim to improve access and quality countywide. The district said local programs may continue if student interest holds and regional offerings like the aviation program at Magruder High School will include extra entry points beyond Grade 9—enrollment and outcomes are tracked to maintain quality. - ➤ Peterson Cos. has proposed a plan to add up to 500 multi-family residential units—along with 43,000 square feet of retail—at Rio Lakefront that will feature several new buildings and a relocated playground.
