  • Darwin Garcia Lopez, an 18-year-old from Gaithersburg, died when his electric bike hit a pothole on September 2—local community members launched a fundraiser to help his family with funeral costs.  The MoCo Show

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Irene’s Pupusas has opened its newest restaurant at 12854 New Hampshire Ave in Colesville’s Meadowood shopping center, a space that once housed Kat’s Kitchen and Dominic’s Italian Grille. It honors late Irene Cuevas by serving traditional pupusas along with a mix of Salvadoran and Honduran dishes—its menu also includes tacos, soups and more.  The MoCo Show
  • Multiple new restaurants and businesses are scheduled to open soon in Gaithersburg—Andy’s Pizza, Chipotle, Fish Taco, HomMali Thai Dining and others will debut in redeveloped shopping centers across the city—while PJ’s Coffee, Sixty Vines, and additional spots are planned for a fall opening with further details to come.  The MoCo Show

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Maryland Department of Health said vaccines will remain available for all residents even as federal policy remains unclear—Governor Moore signed new laws to keep insurance coverage and boost pharmacist vaccination authority—and providers and pharmacies will keep offering vaccines as long as supplies last.  The MoCo Show

SPORTS NEWS

  • Montgomery County resident Gediminas Petraitis, a Northwest High School alumnus, is in his eighth NBA season and has officiated over 450 regular season games and 11 playoff matchups. He began his career at the high school level in Maryland and has also gained international experience as a FIBA referee.  The MoCo Show
