BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two Maryland bakeries, including Gaithersburg's Classic Bakery—family-owned since 1991—and Annapolis’ Sweet Hearts Patisserie have been named in Eater DC’s list of top cake providers for any occasion. The list highlights their unique flavors and custom designs for special celebrations.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MCPS updated its background procedures by starting stronger background checks, fingerprinting staff hired before 2019 plus issuing new Security Certified badges to ensure student and staff safety. The process began on September 8 in the Paint Branch area and will finish by mid-December with progress updates to the Board and the Audit Committee on September 26.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland AG Anthony G. Brown secured a preliminary injunction that blocked new federal rules which would have cut funding for food banks—shelters and clinics—while court review continues.  The MoCo Show
  • Over the past week, Montgomery County installed over 200 'No Turn on Red' signs as part of the Safe Streets Act to reduce pedestrian and cyclist injuries — the county also lengthened crosswalk times and will review school zone intersections — drivers who ignore the rule will face a $90 fine with a point on their license.  FOX 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • MCPS high school football games saw week 2 scores finalized on September 11 with Quince Orchard 35 at Walter Johnson 6, Paint Branch 36 at Einstein 0, and Clarksburg 14 at Magruder 0 in the third quarter—updates will continue as more scores are confirmed.  The MoCo Show
  • MCPS Varsity Volleyball games on September 10th saw Magruder beat Blair 3-0, Clarksburg win 3-1 over Whitman, Poolesville defeat Einstein 3-1, and Damascus edge Kennedy 3-1. On Thursday, September 11th, matchups include Springbrook at Wheaton, Watkins Mill at B-CC, Northwest at Sherwood, Gaithersburg at Northwood, Paint Branch at Quince Orchard, Seneca Valley at Blake, Rockville at Wootton, and Urbana at Richard Montgomery—today, Walter Johnson will face Einstein and Kennedy will play Churchill.  The MoCo Show
