COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery Parks announced that the 'Rooted and Radiant' design won a contest for a new mural at the park activity building in Glenmont Local Park after more than 2,500 votes sorted four entries—work will begin in mid-October and the piece will be unveiled in early November. The mural celebrates local diversity by featuring Maryland plants and Latin American animals.  The MoCo Show

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bao Bei, known for creative Chinese and Taiwanese comfort food, and Bouboulina, offering Greek Mediterranean dishes, are among the two Maryland restaurants featured on Washingtonian Magazine’s Hot List this September. The recognition boosts Montgomery County eateries in the growing DC dining scene—strengthening local business profiles.  The MoCo Show
  • Maryland-based National Lumber Company announced its acquisition of Rockville’s Fisher Lumber at 525 E Gude Dr. to boost service for builders in the DC metro area and will rename the store as National Lumber when the deal closes on October 1 plus the firm will welcome longtime store manager Tim Allen and his team.  The MoCo Show
  • Silver Diner has extended its screenless family game nights through Thanksgiving after a successful summer that boosted kids’ meal sales and Kids Club signups. The Tuesday event runs from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at all locations except BWI—offering Kids Club members perks like a complimentary kids’ shake with a kid’s entrée.  The MoCo Show
  • Song Dog Farm Distillery at 18100 Bucklodge Rd in Boyds will open on Sunday, October 12 in the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve with a grand opening event running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The distillery will craft grain-to-glass spirits and offer free tours, tastings and a ribbon cutting—featuring live music, local food and family-friendly activities on the 29-acre farm.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nearly 80% of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office union members voted no confidence in Sheriff Maxwell Uy’s leadership last week at a press conference in Rockville, and union leader Gino Renne said low morale had led more than 30 deputies to leave the department. Sheriff Uy later denied claims of a toxic culture and retaliation by calling them meritless.  WTOP
  • Montgomery County will celebrate Active Aging Week from Oct. 6 to 12 with over 50 free and low-cost programs for residents 55 and older. The week will begin with a signature event at the Nancy H. Dacek North Potomac Community Recreation Center on Oct. 6—featuring health workshops, wellness activities and a resource fair.  The MoCo Show
  • Yesterday, Montgomery County Planning Department presented its Development Pipeline Analysis to the Planning Board and reported that high interest rates, rising construction costs, lengthy regulatory delays and local policies slowed housing production for 29,500 unbuilt units across 88 projects while recommending streamlined review processes and revised rent stabilization rules.  The MoCo Show

  • MCPS high school football scores from September 18th show four final results—Gaithersburg lost 24 to Seneca Valley 28, Blair lost 14 to Paint Branch 61, Magruder lost 19 to Richard Montgomery 44, and Wootton lost 7 to Whitman 14.   • Montgomery County’s local wrestlers Helen Maroulis of Rockville and Kyle Snyder won world championships this week—Maroulis scored in the final six seconds in the women’s 57kg final while Snyder came from behind in the men’s freestyle 97kg match.  The MoCo Show
