COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On September 23, Montgomery County Public Schools personnel volunteered at Comfort Cases’ national headquarters in Gaithersburg to pack care packages for foster children—each package carrying essentials such as a stuffed animal, blanket, pajamas, toiletries, and a new duffle bag so children do not have to use trash bags for their belongings. The volunteer event supports the nonprofit’s ongoing work to help kids entering or transitioning within foster care.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery College received $286,109 from the federal TRIO Student Support Services program to help low-income, first-generation and disabled students succeed in college—lawmakers announced the funding on Sept 2 as part of a $726,497 investment in community colleges across Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. The grant will support advising, tutoring and mentoring services to improve student outcomes.  The MoCo Show
  • Yesterday, county leaders including County Executive Marc Elrich, Council President Kate Stewart, School Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor, and Health and Human Services Director Dr. James Bridgers announced a $10 million investment in early childhood education to expand Head Start and create new childcare programs at the Academy Child Development Center at Stone Mill Elementary in North Potomac—an effort aimed at fixing gaps in local services.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Richard Montgomery High School graduate Liliana Katz-Hollander was awarded the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship worth $40,000 — given as $10,000 each year — to help pay for college; she was honored at a retreat at the Reagan Library for her leadership and strong academics.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Public Schools is making progress on major construction projects that will upgrade school facilities across the county. The new Northwood High rebuild in Silver Spring will open by fall while Gaithersburg’s Crown High and elementary projects in Silver Spring and Burtonsville will open in August — officials say the improvements will create safer, modern spaces for student learning.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County will install 140 speed cameras and 76 red-light cameras in school zones in October to curb speeding and reduce collisions. Under a contract with Vitronic as part of the Vision Zero program, fines will rise from $40 for speeds 12 mph over the limit to $425 for extreme speeding—steps aimed at lowering traffic-related injuries.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Maryland launched Playgrounds for All—a new online resource by the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council and the Maryland Department of Disabilities to help families and communities find playgrounds that are not only ADA-accessible but truly inclusive. The website does not list any playgrounds in Montgomery County but features several nearby to guide future park upgrades.  The MoCo Show
  • The Purple Line project remains on track to open by the end of 2027 after 10 years of construction, with work 82% complete and track fully installed on the Prince George’s side as work moves into Montgomery County—track installation there will finish in the spring with 19 of 28 light rail vehicles delivered. Officials noted that Sligo Creek Parkway will be closed for the next two months while small businesses affected by the construction can apply for an MDOT grant starting Oct. 6.  WTOP
  • Montgomery County Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting about the Veirs Mill Road BRT project at Albert Einstein High School in Kensington on October 21—residents will receive updates and share feedback during the meeting.  The MoCo Show

SPORTS NEWS

  • Montgomery County high school football rankings for Week 4 show several teams as undefeated and others with early losses, with Quince Orchard shutting out opponents and Seneca Valley narrowly beating Gaithersburg before facing state champions. Key matchups are set for teams like Sherwood, Blake, and Northwest as rivalries heat up and season stakes rise—evidence that Friday night games are already shaping local football.  The MoCo Show
