BUSINESS NEWS

  • Phia, a new restaurant inspired by Appalachian traditions, will open early 2026 on the Takoma Park/Takoma DC border—honoring founder Brad Feickert’s grandmother from Matewan—while its menu blends historic recipes with modern cooking techniques.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery County actress Katie Killacky, founder of Capital Coaching Studio, has watched her daughters build impressive acting careers in Hollywood—Maggie guest-starred on NBC’s Law & Order: Organized Crime and will appear in upcoming films while Annabelle is set for guest roles on HBO’s The Pitt—and together they will have recurring roles on Mayor of Kingstown when it returns October 26.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery Parks and nature centers host many Halloween events this month for families to enjoy, including ghostly train rides on weekends, ice skating on October 24 and October 30, and hikes on October 26 with craft and story activities. Ticket prices range from $4 to $25 per person — each event offers a unique experience at locations like Cabin John, Wheaton and Brookside — so families can plan their visits.  The MoCo Show
  • Kimberly J. Brown—known for her role as Marnie Piper in Halloweentown—grew up in Gaithersburg and recalled her early days playing outside and exploring nature in a 2016 interview. She remains connected to the iconic film series and its Halloween tradition.  The MoCo Show

  • Watkins Mill High School showcased fun facts from its 1999 yearbook in a feature titled '99 Things You Never Knew About Watkins Mill,' which lists school pranks, sports records, and memorable moments. The review draws on photos and anecdotes to show the school’s rich past—offering a snapshot of events that students and teachers still recall.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland MVA and MDOT unveiled a new driver’s license design with an optional hidden disability symbol—a butterfly that helps first responders identify those who may need assistance. Marylanders can add or remove the symbol for free via online update or at any MVA branch, backed by community advocates and lawmakers.  The MoCo Show
  • Gaithersburg officials will review a proposal from the Eugene B. Casey Foundation to redevelop the Rosedale Apartments property into a mixed-income community with up to 434 multifamily units — the project covers three parcels near South Frederick Avenue and I-370. A joint public hearing is scheduled for October 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gaithersburg Council Chambers, where residents can submit testimony in person, via Zoom, or by mail.  The MoCo Show

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services released its first report on chronic diseases from 2010 to 2023—showing that non-Hispanic Black residents face worse outcomes while the county exceeds state and national benchmarks in many areas. County officials will use the data to guide future health policies and target services to improve health equity.  The MoCo Show

  • On October 3, Montgomery County Public Schools released Week 5 football scores—Gaithersburg fell 0 to Northwest’s 35 at halftime while other games featured close matchups with teams like Wheaton and Quince Orchard posting competitive scores.  The MoCo Show
