COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The annual Kentlands Bar Crawl drew a record 150 participants and raised nearly $1,500 for Comfort Cases—an organization that provides care packages for children entering foster care. Organizers plan to host two more events next year and thanked local restaurants and bars for their support.  The MoCo Show

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Charley Prime Foods at 9811 Washington Blvd will close this week and reopen as Charley: A Chesapeake Chophouse & Bar on Monday, October 13 when it unveils a new coastal menu featuring a 9-ounce Maryland crab cake, rotating raw bar & family-style to-go kits; the redesign adds coastal décor with white shiplap walls & vintage signage.  The MoCo Show
  • Chicken Basket, located at 30 N. Summit Ave. in Olde Towne Gaithersburg, will celebrate its 47th anniversary on Thursday, October 9 by offering 10% off meals+ it first opened in 1978 and reopened in 2023 after closing in April 2019 due to a fire. The restaurant continues to be a neighborhood favorite.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Roy’s Place, a restaurant that opened in Rockville in 1955 and moved to Olde Towne Gaithersburg in 1971, closed in 2013 and was known for its quirky 23-page menu with over 200 sandwiches—featuring creative items that captured founder Roy Passin’s unique style. Local patrons still remember its colorful stories and distinctive flavors—memories that continue to shape the community's culinary heritage.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools is hosting several sessions on the Woodward Boundary Study to review changes for Charles W. Woodward High School, which will open in the 2027-2028 school year. The sessions include a today in-person meeting at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and an online meeting on Oct 9 from 7 to 8 p.m.—officials say the study will address overcrowding and adjust school boundaries.  FOX 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County council races are heating up as five of the 11 members will not seek reelection—councilmembers running for county executive and challengers for various seats have already filed or announced plans with filings due by Feb. 24 and the primary set for June 23. Voters in Gaithersburg will soon decide on many new faces for the council.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Council passed a Bring Your Own Bag law that will take effect on January 1, 2026—banning most plastic carryout bags and charging 10 cents for paper bags. Retailers must post signage and face fines for noncompliance as half the fee supports local water quality programs.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection warns federal employees and families to avoid scams during the government shutdown—many workers have been furloughed. County officials advise residents to verify sources and contact MC311 for help with housing, utilities and other consumer needs.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Community Action Agency’s VITA program is seeking volunteers for the 2025 tax season to schedule appointments and provide free tax prep for households earning $69,000 or less—volunteers will get free training at sites in Gaithersburg, Rockville, Silver Spring, and Wheaton. Virtual information sessions for interested applicants will be held on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. to noon and 6 to 7 p.m.  The MoCo Show

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, a government shutdown is raising concerns as a $150 million emergency fund for WIC may run out soon—nonprofit So What Else, which serves 40,000 families weekly, is preparing to assist more families while local health departments work to keep the program operating.  WTOP
  • The Maryland Department of Health consolidated its three Medicaid waiver programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities into one program called Community Pathways—effective October 6 to streamline service access. Recipients are transferred automatically and the agency continues to hold community meetings and webinars to answer questions.  The MoCo Show

SPORTS NEWS

  • Montgomery County Recreation ended its NFL Flag Football season last weekend at Wheaton High School — 468 youth players competed in games at Wheaton and Damascus Community Recreation Center. Former Commanders players and local mascots visited during the final week and signed autographs with the players.  The MoCo Show
