  • Gaithersburg’s 32nd Annual Oktoberfest returns on Sunday, October 12 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Kentlands where thousands will enjoy live Bavarian music, food, and artisan vendors + family fun, and some local streets will be closed from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. +  The MoCo Show

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce announced its 2025 Business Award winners including Aprio, Giant Food, F.O. Day Co., X-energy, Maryland Department of Labor, Olney Theatre Center, David McNairy of Dabos Inc and Liatris. The winners will be honored at an awards dinner on November 12 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center — 600 guests are expected to attend.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Gaithersburg High School alumna Jodie Turner-Smith stars as Athena in Disney’s Tron: Ares, which will release in theaters on October 10—she moved to Gaithersburg in 1996 from England and was once voted 'Most Likely to Succeed' by her classmates.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting with the Class of 2026, all MCPS high school graduations will be held at UMBC — a change made to provide a comfortable indoor setting and reduce costs, with transportation details to be shared soon.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland announced today a no interest $700 loan program for essential federal employees who worked without pay during the shutdown if it lasts through Oct. 15. Applicants must show proof of Maryland residency and federal status, and they will repay the loan 45 days after the shutdown ends — a measure to ease financial hardship.  Montgomery Community Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • AdventistHealthCare is preparing for a government shutdown by tracking spending and tests—delayed Medicare and Medicaid payments may cause cash flow problems. Dr. Patsy McNeil said patients will still get needed care and she urged the community to get flu shots as vaccination rates fall.  Montgomery Community Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee is accepting nominations until Oct. 31 for the Unsung Sports Hero Award—an honor for local individuals and groups expanding sports access. Award winners will be recognized on April 26 at the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony—held in Silver Spring.  The MoCo Show
  • Quince Orchard Cougars beat Churchill 34-13 in Potomac to record their 18th straight win and move to a 5-0 record. Quarterback Will Drakeford threw for 134 yards and three touchdowns as Churchill will regroup on Thursday in Gaithersburg.  The MoCo Show
