COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A recent Capital Area Food Bank report shows that 35% of Montgomery residents face food insecurity—820,000 people in the region skip meals as cuts to SNAP and Medicaid benefits reduce support. Local officials in Takoma Park and Rockville say these federal reductions add extra pressure to families and small businesses.  Montgomery Community Media

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sixty Vines will open on October 13 at 212 Ellington Blvd as Maryland’s first location from the Texas restaurant known for its wine-on-tap program and vineyard-inspired cuisine. The venue offers seasonal dishes and communal tables—designed for shared dining experiences and lower packaging waste—and aims to bring wine country to Gaithersburg.  The MoCo Show
  • Steezeburger and PhoWheelz have announced a collaboration that will offer a fusion taco—featuring a smash-burger wrapped in roti with melted American cheese, diced onions, and signature sauce—available at PhoWheelz in Burtonsville from October 24 through November 30.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • RisuCon filled the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg on Saturday—drawing cosplayers and live-action role-players—and moved from Bethesda North Marriott Hotel to offer more space; organizers scheduled the next event for Sept 26.  Montgomery Community Media
  • MCM and Hola Montgomery hosted an event with chef Miguel Lara—resident of Montgomery County—to honor Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15 and recognizes the history, culture and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County native Rei Ami joined EJAE and Audrey Nuna on The Tonight Show on October 7 to perform the first full television rendition of 'Golden' from KPop Demon Hunters—Fallon revealed the soundtrack had gone platinum.  The MoCo Show

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Montgomery County’s retail shops remain stable but are softening—households are expected to spend about $13 billion as businesses adjust to job losses and online trends. A county report will update by spring to show how retail is adapting.  WTOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office is inviting middle and high school students to submit original PSAs on opioid misuse and fentanyl from October 9 to December 7 for 10 SSL hours. Top prizes including $5,000 for first place will be awarded at the Save a Student Summit on January 31, 2026—honoring Michael Pisarra and Matthew Loudon—while runners-up will earn $3,000 and $1,000.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Executive Marc Elrich supports a bill to enforce the gas-powered leaf blower ban without using photographs; the ban, which began on July 1 to reduce noise and health issues, is supported by Councilmembers who introduced the measure and scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday, Oct 21—this change aims to protect immigrant workers from undue scrutiny.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County DHCA reported its FY25 investments supported 1,827 affordable homes from 25 projects—a 61% increase over 2024—and early FY26 projects will add 462 units, bringing the total to 2,289 since FY25 began. County funding, including PILOT agreements, continues to drive efforts to create and preserve affordable housing for families and seniors.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Councilmembers Will Jawando and Andrew Friedson debated rent stabilization and housing policy at a Renters Alliance forum at Montgomery Community Media’s Studio A Thursday evening—each outlining plans for County Executive candidacy and differing on the impact of rent caps on development.
