BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ MINISO is celebrating its grand opening at 12266F Rockville Pike in Federal Plaza on Saturday, October 18 at 11 a.m.—the store located between Tiger Sugar and Fulton Bank will offer 20% off to the first 50 customers and 10% off all weekend. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Fontina Grille will leave its current King Farm location—long a community favorite for Italian food—for a new 5,135-square-foot space at The Laureate at Westside at Shady Grove in fall 2026, with construction starting soon. The new space will include a private dining room and expanded outdoor seating as the current restaurant stays open until the move. The MoCo Show
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On October 16th, Montgomery County officials said that planned Crown High School might be used as a temporary site for students from Damascus, Wootton, and Magruder while their schools undergo renovations — a plan driven by lower enrollment and shifting construction needs. The boundary study will gather community feedback through year-end — with a Superintendent’s Recommendation set for December and a final Board decision scheduled for March. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools is investigating a senior class t-shirt from Sherwood High School that showed letters and numbers resembling a racial slur. The district apologized and will recall the shirts and give new ones while reviewing how the design was approved—taking steps to support affected students. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Board of Education members reviewed four calendar proposals for the next school year during their meeting on Thursday, and the final version will be adopted on Dec. 11. Two proposals begin school on Aug. 31 and end on June 23 while the other two start on Aug. 24 and finish on June 15 (all versions include a winter break from Dec. 24 through Jan. 1). - ➤ Grace Rivera-Oven, vice-president of the Montgomery County School Board, explained that ICE agents might be present near schools to ease parents’ fears about sending their children to class—she urged parents to stay informed about the situation. - ➤ MCPS High School Football week 7 scores from Thursday, October 16 show final results for games including Walter Johnson 6 at Northwest 41, Quince Orchard 42 at Clarksburg 0, Wootton 0 at Sherwood 35, Northwood 0 at Wheaton 38, and Poolesville 30 at Watkins Mill 8—scores for other games are still pending confirmation.
