COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gaithersburg will host the FOXES Children's Business Fair (Fostering Opportunities for Xceptional Entrepreneurial Stars) on Saturday, October 25 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Locally Crafted on 35 Grand Corner Avenue, where 40 young entrepreneurs will run booths to sell their original items and learn key business skills.  The MoCo Show

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Robert (Bob) David Youngentob, the founding partner and executive chairman of Bethesda-based EYA, LLC, died on October 18 after battling cancer (at 64). Funeral services are held today at Washington Hebrew Congregation in Washington, D.C. followed by interment at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park in Clarksburg; he is survived by his wife Linda and daughters Lisa, Jamie, and Casey.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spider Manor has returned to the Kentlands at 237 Little Quarry Road for its annual Halloween display during October. Every night from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., carved pumpkins, dancing skeletons and giant spiders come to life in a show that supports a Make-A-Wish fundraiser in memory of Alek Nelson—visitors can donate by feeding the white pumpkin or scanning a QR code.  The MoCo Show
  • VisArts in Rockville is offering free collage workshops for furloughed federal employees at its Gibbs Street location to help ease the stress of the ongoing government shutdown—each session provides art supplies, instruction and a chance to be creative with up to 25 participants. Upcoming workshops will be held on Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 at 10 a.m.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • William H. Farquhar Middle School opened in 1968 and marked a shift for Montgomery County Public Schools in Olney by serving grades six through eight – its new model led nearly all junior highs in the county to become middle schools by the mid-1980s.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Office of Procurement will host its annual Procurement Fair on Nov. 5 at the Silver Spring Civic Building—providing workshops, panel discussions and vendor registration sessions for local, minority, veteran and women-owned businesses to learn about certification and future contracting opportunities. Local procurement offices will share additional insights to help vendors secure upcoming projects.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Department of Transportation announced that Ride On Route 19 will not serve bus stops on Dallas Avenue due to a Halloween Block Party on Oct. 31 from 4:30 to 9 p.m.—passengers should use stops at Dallas Avenue and Lanark Way instead.  The MoCo Show
  • The Montgomery County Council unanimously approved legislation today to create a community choice aggregator (CCA) that will let residents and small businesses access renewable electricity at stable prices. Sponsored by Council President Kate Stewart, the measure assigns the Department of Environmental Protection to run the program and help the county meet its climate goals by 2035.  The MoCo Show
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has urged the IMF to sell the Bretton Woods Recreation Center golf course in Germantown — a 286-acre site with an 18-hole course, clubhouse and other amenities — to sharpen its focus on global financial stability. Local planning authorities and community groups are watching closely as a sale could affect traffic, the environment and tax revenue while the property stays open.  The MoCo Show

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A report from the Greater Capital Area Association of REALTORS® shows that in September, homes in Montgomery County and Washington, D.C. took longer to sell as inventory grew and buyers had more options. In Montgomery County, median sold prices fell to $599,450 while in D.C. they rose to $680,000—marking a shift toward a more balanced market than last year.  The MoCo Show
