BUSINESS NEWS

  • Guapo’s, founded in the early 1990s by Hector Rincón, became a local favorite when its Gaithersburg outlet at Rio Lakefront opened in 1994 and remains one of Montgomery’s busiest restaurants. The restaurant serves sizzling fajitas and salt-rimmed margaritas that continue to draw families, college students, and coworkers from across the region.  The MoCo Show
  • California Tortilla will close its Gaithersburg restaurant at 12211 Darnestown Road on November 2, a store representative confirmed today—this fast-casual Mexican restaurant in Quince Orchard Marketplace across from Quince Orchard High School has been a local favorite but will soon serve its final meals—.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • FOX 5’s team went live from Markoff’s Haunted Forest in Dickerson Thursday evening—capturing Halloween scares and excitement for local viewers. The broadcast featured reports by Jim Lokay, Marina Marraco, Angie Goff and Chad Ricardo as they highlighted the event’s spooky attractions.  FOX 5
  • Montgomery Parks invites community members to honor Maryland Emancipation Day on November 1 with events that include a guided hike at Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, museum tours at Josiah Henson Museum and interactive activities at Oakley Cabin. The celebrations—designed to educate and reflect on Maryland’s 1864 abolition of slavery—will include exhibits, storytelling and cultural programs.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Montgomery County Council approved a bill that lets residents and small commercial electric customers choose competitively priced renewable electricity through a community choice aggregation program — using bulk purchasing to help keep rates stable. The policy was introduced amid shifts in federal energy policy — as county officials work to maintain reliable clean energy options for consumers.  Montgomery Community Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Montgomery County teen Drew Mendelow relaunched his T1D1 app today after receiving FDA clearance — the app helps kids track insulin and blood sugar levels. He said funding and consultant support allowed him to complete the required human factor study, and he plans to add languages and new features soon.  FOX 5
  • Ryan’s Place opened Wednesday on Beechcraft Avenue in Gaithersburg to serve developmentally disabled individuals and their families with integrated medical care. Founded by Debbie Sahlin and Greg Miller, the center was partly funded by a Montgomery County Technology Innovation Fund grant to meet unique needs.  Montgomery Community Media
