COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Furloughed federal workers in Gaithersburg received food boxes at Seneca Creek Community Church as the government shutdown continues and need grows—box distributions rose from 150 to 400 at recent events. Community Hope Center and the Capital Area Food Bank will keep offering support until the shutdown ends.  WTOP

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a two-alarm fire on Deborah Drive in Potomac on October 30th that forced an adult and a child to evacuate and saw firefighters rescue three dogs while electrical issues with multiple extension cords sparked the blaze, causing over $300K in damage and displacing a family—collateral damage affected a neighboring unit.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Libraries will host its first annual local author showcase on Nov. 22 at Wheaton Community Recreation Center from 12-5 p.m.—the event will feature meet-and-greet sessions with local authors, a book sale, and activities for all ages in the gym and social hall.  Montgomery Community Media
  • On October 30th, Emily Bravo—founder of Bravos Beauty—visited MCM studios to share simple Halloween makeup tips with the local community. Her demonstration focused on easy techniques to create fun seasonal looks.  Montgomery Community Media
  • The City of Gaithersburg celebrates Native American Heritage Month this November with an educational presentation and proclamation that honors local Native American culture and achievements (Heritage Week runs November 23 to 30).  The MoCo Show
  • With Halloween today, fans recall that actor Sean Murray—who played Thackery Binx in Hocus Pocus and Special Agent Timothy McGee on NCIS—was born at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Montgomery County. His local roots helped launch a film and TV career that remains a point of pride.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MCDOT announced that on Nov 11 county offices and MC311 will be closed while most Ride On bus services run on a holiday schedule with Flash Orange on a modified schedule and Flash Blue not operating. Parking will be free at Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Wheaton public lots and Metrorail, Metrobus, and MARC trains will run on adjusted timetables — updated details are posted on the Montgomery County website.  The MoCo Show
  • Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency on October 30 in response to the federal shutdown and announced $10 million to support Maryland food security partners. The funds will aid food banks and community programs—federal SNAP benefits will stop on November 1 if no federal action occurs.  The MoCo Show

  • Lev BenAvram, a college fencer from Bethesda, had his luggage lost by Air France before a tournament in Tunisia earlier this year—he received about $2000 in compensation after repeated appeals, and the setback helped him learn to control the controllables as he aims for a spot on Team USA.  WTOP
