BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dollar Tree opened in early November in White Oak in the retail space that once housed Office Depot at 11130 New Hampshire Avenue. The discount chain is expanding in Montgomery County—recent new stores include locations in Cloverly Town Center, North Bethesda and Kentlands in Gaithersburg.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • The LuminoCity Winter Lights Festival opens this Friday, November 14, at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds (501 Perry Parkway) in Gaithersburg and will run through January 1, 2026. The event features themed light art displays that promise a dazzling experience for visitors of all ages.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local farmers, chefs and county officials gathered in Germantown plus BlackRock Center for the Arts Monday to review policy changes and support agriculture while strengthening the farm-to-table movement in Montgomery County. Key speakers including Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks and U.S. Rep. April McClain Delaney highlighted efforts to protect 93,000 acres of Agricultural Reserve.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Police honored 75 officers and two civilians on Wednesday for acts of bravery that saved lives and kept the county safe. The awards included the Medal of Valor for Officer Eric Mercurio and Guardian Awards for Officers Edward Cochran, Sgt. Gary Guard and Officer Ignatious Zakrjewski—recognizing daily service that protects our community.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Metrobus will launch the Tap. Ride. Go. system later this month—allowing riders to pay with a credit or debit card and mobile payments instead of a SmarTrip card. WMATA says the change is aimed at speeding boarding and reducing fare evasion on buses.  FOX 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Baba Oladotun, one of the nation’s top high school basketball prospects, will announce his college commitment on Wednesday, November 19 at James Hubert Blake High School in Silver Spring. He has narrowed his choices to Arkansas, Georgetown, Kentucky, and Maryland and his decision is seen as a major milestone for Montgomery County hoops (local fans and teammates expect a strong turnout).  The MoCo Show
  • McDonough High School’s Kosi Ukiwe was named Military Bowl Touchdown Club High School Football Player of the Week after a strong playoff performance where he rushed 13 times for 141 yards, caught a 90-yard touchdown pass and made eight tackles with five sacks. His play on both offense and defense has drawn college attention—Morgan State recently offered him a scholarship.  WTOP
  • The Montgomery College men's soccer team won a 3-0 victory over Monroe Community College on Nov. 9 to capture the Mid-Atlantic District Championship and secure a spot in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. They will compete in Daytona Beach on Nov. 16 at 8:30 a.m. against Blinn College.  The MoCo Show
