COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members are urging Montgomery County officials to rebuild Wootton High School in Rockville due to poor conditions and safety issues; the Montgomery County Board of Education will vote on the Capital Improvements Program on Thursday — proposals include using Crown High School as a temporary site.  FOX 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Google tech expert Bailey Thompson said that drivers should leave before 10 a.m. or after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26 to avoid heavy traffic while traveling for Thanksgiving. She noted that on Thanksgiving Day, traffic will be heavy between noon and 3 p.m., so shoppers should plan trips at quieter times.  WTOP

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery Parks announced that Garden of Lights will return to Brookside Gardens on Nov. 21—transforming the Wheaton gardens into a winter display with over one million lights along a half-mile path—and visitors must buy tickets in advance, costing $13.99 on weekdays and $16.99 on weekends, as the event runs until Jan. 4, 2026 with select closures.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Councilmembers Will Jawando and Kristin Mink sent a letter to MCPS Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor after data showed a 29 percent increase in out-of-school suspensions and an 80 percent rise in in-school suspensions during the first five weeks of classes. They requested more details on student input into Code of Conduct revisions and security staff training—clarifying daily searches at alternative education programs and addressing community inquiries handled through the Maryland Public Information Act process.  The MoCo Show
  • Nicole Murray-Lewis, a longtime social studies teacher at Blake High School, was elected as the teacher member on the Maryland State Board of Education after receiving 39.9 percent of 3,624 votes cast from November 3 to 17 — her appointment now will be sent to Governor Wes Moore for confirmation by the Maryland State Senate.  The MoCo Show

  • Gaithersburg has doubled food service funding for Manna, Community Hope Center, and Gaithersburg Help by awarding each an extra $30,000 to aid residents after SNAP benefits were suspended during a federal shutdown (emergency funds will support food assistance while federal support remains uncertain).  The MoCo Show
  • Today, the Montgomery County Inspector General reported that MCPS used inconsistent methods for buying school supplies and services during fiscal years 2023 and 2024—missing records and bypassing board approval for purchases over $25,000. Superintendent Thomas Taylor said the system will add updated manuals in February and a spending tool by December to improve oversight and control.  Montgomery Community Media

  • Watercrafters invites Gaithersburg residents to visit its showroom where Finnleo saunas offer both traditional and infrared options designed to improve health—features include energy-efficient heating and digital controls.   • Montgomery County Public Schools released the 2025 Girls' Volleyball All-County Teams that honor top players from a competitive season. Taryn Su from Wootton was named Player of the Year and will join Division I at Stony Brook University.  The MoCo Show
  • The MPSSAA 4A state quarterfinal football games feature local Montgomery County teams set to play Friday night—predictions favor Quince Orchard beating Flowers 23—7, Churchill outscoring Blair 28—14, Paint Branch overcoming Broadneck 34—21, and Sherwood toppling North Point 22—14 as they vie for a Thanksgiving semifinal slot.  The MoCo Show
