- ➤ Montgomery Parks has announced a series of holiday-themed events in December — from community decorating to ice shows and craft sessions — that will bring festive cheer to local residents with activities planned through early January. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery College’s women’s group was honored as a 2025 AAWCC Model Chapter by the American Association for Women in Community Colleges—recognizing its strong programs and leadership in supporting women in community colleges. Since 2017, the group has nearly tripled its membership—offering scholarships, service projects, and mentoring as part of its educational initiatives. The MoCo Show

- ➤ Montgomery County officials warn residents to plan for safe and sober Thanksgiving travel as heavier traffic+ early darkness and increased alcohol use heighten crash risks. The Holiday Task Force will run sobriety checkpoints and patrols from November 19 through January 10 to deter impaired driving. The MoCo Show
- ➤ The final light rail vehicle for the Purple Line project arrived in Maryland on November 19th, completing the full order for the 16-mile route planned to run from Bethesda to New Carrollton. The 142-foot railcar holds 430 passengers, seats 80, and can take eight wheelchairs and eight bike racks — it will now undergo testing and commissioning as the project remains 84.6% complete and is set to open in 2027. - ➤ Montgomery County Department of Transportation began running its Flash Lights holiday buses on US 29 after a decorated bus debuted at the Silver Spring Thanksgiving Parade on November 22. The zero-fare buses will run throughout December and offer riders a chance to win a $35 gift card by sharing photos online—contest entries continue until January 5. The MoCo Show
- ➤ County officials announced an agreement with WRS Inc. Real Estate Investments to buy nearly two acres of the old Lakeforest Mall site for a new transit center— the mall, which closed in 2023 after 45 years in business, will be demolished next month— and the transit center will open in about two years, adding 10 bus bays to improve the 355 Bus Rapid Transit service. - ➤ The Montgomery County Department of Transportation is recruiting 20 to 30 high school students for its Vision Zero Youth Ambassadors program, which teaches leadership and traffic safety skills through hands-on projects. Applications are open until Dec. 5 and, if accepted, students will join in-person sessions at the County Executive Office Building in Rockville+ they will work on a community safety project to culminate with a Safety Day event in May. - ➤ Olympic gold medalist Quincy Wilson, the 16-year-old under-18 400-meter world record holder from Gaithersburg, has signed with the University of Maryland track and field program after choosing Maryland over offers from South Carolina, Southern California, Texas A&M and UCLA—he won gold in the 4×400-meter relay at Paris 2024.
