EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Families in Gaithersburg and across the district voiced concerns at a board meeting as Montgomery County Public Schools considered eight redistricting proposals affecting the under-construction Crown High School; a final vote is expected in March. FOX 5
- ➤ MCPS Superintendent Thomas Taylor released a proposed $3.78B budget for fiscal year 2027 on Wednesday at the county school board headquarters in Rockville, a plan that increases spending by 5% to raise staff salaries and reduce elementary class sizes by at least one student. WTOP
- ➤ Gaithersburg High School appears on the updated 2026 Niche list from the U.S. Department of Education as one of the 25 largest high schools in Maryland, with an enrollment of 2,454 students and Montgomery Blair High School leading the ranking. The MoCo Show
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery County’s Dickerson incinerator exceeded pollutant limits last month and was shut down for repairs; the Maryland Department of the Environment issued a violation notice with additional testing planned, while county executive Marc Elrich wants the unit closed within a year + a third-party expert will review health impacts. - ➤ Montgomery County will expand its ban on plastic carryout bags and raise the paper bag fee from five to 10 cents starting Jan. 1 to protect the environment (5¢ of the paper fee will aid water conservation), following Council President Kate Stewart's unanimous approval. FOX 5
- ➤ Governor Wes Moore today launched the Maryland Community Business Compass (a new platform for data and funding) and announced $10 million to support local child care providers and fresh food retailers, with applications running through early 2026. The MoCo Show
- ➤ The Mayor and City Council will hold a public hearing on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 16 South Summit Avenue to review Peterson Cos.'
