The Diaz family donated new smoke hoods to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue on Saturday, giving firefighters 15 extra minutes in smoke-filled environments.

The equipment, common in Europe and the UK, will soon be on every county fire truck+ to help protect lives and honor Melanie Diaz’s legacy.

Caspian House of Kabob at 72 Market St in Kentlands closed permanently, confirmed by a phone call on December 21 at 8:30 a.m. The space is now available for lease by Saul Centers with no replacement tenant announced yet.

Marlo Furniture, a longtime local retailer founded in 1955, will permanently close all six locations on December 28 — its Rockville Pike showroom is hosting sales with flexible offers on remaining inventory.

The shutdown ends a 70 year tradition for many local families.

White’s Ferry (est. 1786) has remained closed since Dec.

28, 2020 due to an unresolved dispute over Virginia landing rights. In April 2025, local officials offered $3 million to Potomac Crossing LLC and Rockland Farm LLC, but no agreement has been reached.
