CRIME NEWS

  • On June 3rd at 4:30 p.m., Montgomery County Police arrested 31-year-old (Lowell Isaiah Young) and 26-year-old (Daron Antonio Banks) after they chased a person near the Cider Mill Apartments and later recovered a loaded ghost gun from their 2020 Ford Fusion with suspended registration.  The MoCo Show
  • On June 4 at approximately 9:18 p.m., Montgomery County police received a 911 call about an 8-year-old autistic girl missing from her Germantown home and, after community members reported seeing her running through traffic near Middlebrook Road and Frederick Road, they rescued her safely—reuniting her with her mother shortly after.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Giovanni Argueta, a recent UMD engineering graduate who began at the University of Miami and continued his studies at Montgomery College, joined the Cyber-Physical Systems Engineering program at USG to work on a capstone project that uses Blender to correct motion anomalies. His capstone paper was accepted for IEEE SmartNets 2025 and he secured an internship at Digital Infuzion—gaining practical experience in AI research for simulating restricted motion.  The MoCo Show

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The D.C. region's first summer heat wave is set to begin on Sunday as temperatures are expected to hit 100 degrees and high humidity will make it feel hotter. Meteorologists warn that the heat will peak Monday and Tuesday with heat index values as high as 110 degrees—prompting residents to take safety measures.  WTOP
  • Severe storms moved through the D.C. area on Thursday evening and Friday morning, causing downed trees and wires that led Montgomery County crews to answer over 200 calls. Several incidents—including a tree that hit a car and bus on Connecticut Avenue and damage to a home in Takoma Park—resulted in power outages and other disruptions, with Dominion Energy reporting over 13,000 customers without power in Virginia.  FOX 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month and experts note that more than 127,000 Maryland residents suffer from Alzheimer’s, including 22,000 in Montgomery County. Dr. Angela Hsu of Kaiser Permanente said early detection, regular exercise and a balanced diet may help slow the disease’s progress.  Montgomery Community Media
